Executive Challenge

TotalEnergies was executing the $1.5 billion Amenam-Kpono offshore development as part of its strategy to strengthen its position in Nigeria’s upstream sector. The field presented demanding technical conditions: HPHT reservoirs in deeply buried sandstone formations, extended-reach and deviated wells, elevated gas-oil ratios and reservoir fluids containing paraffin and CO₂. These conditions created significant challenges for recovery efficiency, flow assurance and well integrity. Project performance depended on simultaneously managing reservoir pressure, reducing technical and operational risk, controlling costs and achieving first oil on schedule under close regulatory and stakeholder scrutiny.

Strategic Approach

As Head of Well Completion, Mike Etuhoko led an integrated completion strategy combining reservoir management, engineering innovation and capability development. Reservoir pressure and continuity strategies were developed alongside optimized wellbore architecture, while interference testing was used to validate pressure support and reduce field-development uncertainty. Interventionless well designs were deployed to streamline operations, protect HPHT well integrity and reduce lifecycle intervention requirements. Innovative valve and packer designs further reduced costs. Cross-functional teams were mentored in advanced well design and technology application, embedding knowledge within the organization. The technical learning was also extended externally through the co-authorship and publication of SPE Paper #90760 on well technology and reservoir optimization.

The programme strengthened TotalEnergies’ internal capability to design and execute technically demanding offshore completions while managing reservoir and integrity risk. Teams gained practical experience with interventionless completion architecture, pressure-management strategies and advanced well design. Mentoring and cross-functional knowledge transfer helped institutionalize the learning rather than confining it to individual wells, creating stronger technical capability for subsequent high-consequence offshore developments.
